Chris Columbus will direct Gremlins 3, and it’s now heading to cinemas in 2028, a year later than planned.

It’ll have taken nearly 40 years by the time Gremlins 3 finally arrives, but plans for a fresh film in the franchise have finally come together. It’d been reported a year back that Chris Columbus, who penned the first movie, will assume the director’s chair on the third. Steven Spielberg is executive producing.

The plan with this iteration was to have the movie in cinemas in November 2027. That’s been put back a bit, with Warner Bros now confirming that it’s going to arrive on 6th October 2028 instead. That points to a start of production early next, with the script penned by Zack Lipovsky and Adam Stein (who recently put together Final Destination: Bloodlines.)

Famously, director Joe Dante – who isn’t involved in Gremlins 3 from what I can gleam – approached the making of Gremlins 2: The New Batch with a plan of ripping up any plans for further sequels. In fairness to him, his superb, subversive 1990 follow-up had a good run there. The third film though follows Warner Bros’ success with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice a few years ago, although the more recent Practical Magic 2 hasn’t performed quite as well.

Still, it’s not stopped the studio from mining its archives for belated sequels, and I’d imagine it’s the success of Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice follow-up that ultimately got Gremlins 3 over the line.

Warner Bros has released a very brief teaser trailer for the new movie, whose job is to reintroduce us to the noise of Gizmo, and also announce the brand new release date for the film. You can see that here…

No official casting has thus far been announced for the new movie, although that’s inevitably incoming over the coming months. For now, just the confirmation that this time, after many aborted attempts over the past few decades, Gremlins 3 is actually a thing.
