World War II thriller sequel Greyhound 2 is now in production, with Tom Hanks returning as screenwriter and star. Stephen Graham’s also back.
With all the turbulence of 2020 and the pandemic, you may have almost forgotten about Greyhound, the lean yet effective maritime war thriller written by and starring Tom Hanks (we certainly did, ahem…).
The sea-based World War II nail-biter was a streaming hit for Apple, however, and so a sequel has been quietly been bubbling away in meeting rooms somewhere far from here.
In fact, Greyhound 2, as we’ll call it for now, is already in production in Australia, with Hanks having written the script and set to return as Captain Krause, who in the first film was tasked with shepherding a flotilla of ships across the Atlantic.
Stephen Graham is also due to return, along with Elisabeth Shue and a number of newcomers including a young actor named Jack Patten. According to Deadline, the sequel will see Captain Krause and his crew join the war effort off the coast of Normandy and in the Pacific. (This isn’t the first time Hanks has been involved in a Normandy military operation, of course – see also Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan, whose searing depiction of Operation Overlord affected pop culture for years afterwards.)
The original film was well-received when it emerged in the summer of 2020 – our own Mark Harrison described it as a “no frills, all thrills dad movie”.
A sequel should offer more of the same, given the same personnel are all returning – including the first film’s director, Aaron Schneider.
There isn’t a release date set for Greyhound 2 yet – nor is there word of whether it’ll get a cinema release; the first film was originally destined for the big screen, but the lockdowns prompted by Covid saw it diverted to Apple TV instead.
