In the latest chapter of ‘crikey, this’ll make some people feel old’, it turns out that the film Highlander – which is currently being remade/rebooted with Henry Cavill in the lead role – is now 40 years old.

Starring Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery, the original movie, replete with Queen’s music to the film, arrived in 1986, and spawned some, cough, ‘less than impressive’ sequels and a television spin-off too. But it’s the original that’s lived long in the memory, as immortals battle across time and car parks.

The film’s birthday is being celebrated in time honoured fashion, by trying to get us to spend some extra money. There’s a sporting chance it might work, too, with Studiocanal releasing a new 40th anniversary collector’s Highlander 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray set.

There’s a ton of stuff in the box, too. For your money, you’re getting brand new artwork, two posters, a 32-page Titan Comics minibook, a 100 page booklet of Highlander stuff, a 4K disc, a Blu-ray disc, and a host of extra features. I’m counting at least three audio commentaries in the listing, as well as a bunch of features and featurettes. There’s whatever a removable O-ring is as well, which sounds a bit filthy, but actually is so the clean artwork can be displayed. It says here. Officer.

The new set is going on sale from 29th June 2026, and is available to order right here.

For now, we’ll leave you with the synopsis for the film, and allow you to make any variant on the old ‘there can be only one’ jokes in the comments below. Fair?

After inexplicably surviving a mortal wound during a clan battle in the Scottish Highlands in 1536, Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert) is accused of witchcraft and banished from his village. Years later, he meets Ramirez (Sean Connery), a swordsman who teaches MacLeod the truth about himself: he belongs to an immortal race who can only die when the head is cut from the body.

MacLeod fights his way through the centuries until the time of The Gathering, when the few immortals who have survived the ages will come together to fight until just one remains. In 1980s New York City the final fight is about to begin and, in the end, there can be only one…

Postscript: the latest, gorgeous edition of Film Stories magazine also has its own 40th anniversary tribute to Highlander. Our 18-page section devoted to the cult classic explores how it was written by a firefighter in his spare time, and how its unique look and feel was directly connected to the London rock video scene of the early-to-mid 1980s.

Plus! Writer Charlie Brigden dives deep into Queen and composer Michael Kamen’s unforgettable soundtrack. You can order a copy from our very own online emporium.
