Tony Scott’s The Last Boy Scout is heading to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray soon – and there may be an alternate, early cut of the movie included.
Heading our way, potentially even this year, is the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray debut of Tony Scott’s The Last Boy Scout. Written by Shane Black, and headlined by Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans, the action comedy was at best a modest hit on its original release, but also, rightly, has become a movie with a sizeable fanbase.
Arrow was revealed to be working on a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release earlier this year, with a postcard teasing The Last Boy Scout tucked into one of its releases. But in the new episode of The Bristol Cult Film Society Cult Film Podcast, the guests are James Pearcey and James White. They’re producers at Arrow, and towards the end of the two-parter podcast, they dropped in news of a separate cut of The Last Boy Scout.
The conversation kicks in around an hour into part two of the podcast, and the Arrow team talk about the sound mix on the upcoming release. But they talk about working with Ward Russell, the cinematographer on the movie.
“We were also able to access… by accident a year or two, a small college campus cineclub asked Warner for a film print of Last Boy Scout to screen.”
But Warner Bros sent out the workprint, rather than the completed version. It turns out that the workprint, a pre-release version of the film, has a number of different edits, and a chunk more violence, and the plan is to get that signed off and included on the 4K release. That’s not been confirmed as of yet, and it’s not a director’s cut or anything. But it’s an earlier version of what The Last Boy Scout looked like, and it’s been discovered pretty much entirely by chance.
