The long-gestating big screen outing for Idris Elbaās brooding detective Luther is finally set to go before cameras this year.
It feels like weāve been hearing about a
Luther movie for a very long time now. Both Idris Elba and Neil Cross, star and creator respectively, have mentioned the project at numerous points throughout the years, but with the show itself often taking sizeable gaps between series, bringing everything together to get a movie made seems to be a goal thatās remained forever on the horizon. (Personally, I think the detectiveās amazing tweed coat was the problem as it was reportedly holding out for a better deal than Elba, but unfortunately I canāt share our sources regarding that priceless nugget of information.)
Still, things do finally seem to be coming together. In a chat with Capital FM, Elba has now confirmed that the film version of
Luther is set to get in front of the cameras in 2021, stating that “apart from making more music, people that love my film and stuff, listen, I’m going to be making
Luther: The Movie. I’m super excited and I hope the fans are sort of excited for that. It’s been a long time coming for a movie, so I’m excited about that.”
Happily, this statement is in keeping with Neil Crossā guarded caution back in October when he also told the Radio Times that the film was coming closer to fruition. At the time he said āAsk Idris! We are – I don’t know what I’m allowed to say, which is an answer in of itself! Words are my job and I’ve lost them all. We wanna make more
Luther. We’re gonna make more Luther. The how and the why, that’s all to come, but we’re gonna make more
Luther.”
Finally then, it looks like the big screen version of
Luther might be happening. Weāre certainly looking forward to seeing it and will keep you posted on more details as we hear them.
