Universal snaps up the rights to make a biopic of Bon Jovi, to add to the list of music movies on the way. More here.
Hollywood continues to lean into what it knows is likely to work, and with the superhero balloon deflating, it’s very much the music biopic that’s currently in vogue. We’re just a month or so away, after all, from the Michael Jackson movie Michael, the family-endorsed version of the late music star’s story. Definitely nothing to worry about there.
Anyway: Universal has emerged victorious in a bidding war to bring the story of Bon Jovi to the big screen next. This is a tale of the band itself, rather than zeroing in specifically on frontman Jon Bon Jovi.
Cody Brotter has been confirmed as being put in charge of screenplay duties, although it’s unknown as of yet who’s going to be directing. Brotter has written the upcoming thriller Killing Satoshi, and presumably will be working with the band too on getting the film’s approach sorted.
For there’s the old question as to what direction to take. Films such as Rocketman and Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere have both tonally gone darker, because their subjects are still around to give permission to so. The wildly successful Bohemian Rhapsody meanwhile was far more sanitised, but then Freddie Mercury wasn’t around to encourage them to go in a different direction.
Looking forward to the crossover movie with Young Guns 2: Blaze Of Glory, or at the least, a very good recreation of it in the Bon Jovi biopic.
Still some way to go. Lots of music biopics get going and then get stuck, notably at the moment the long-gestating Bee Gees film, that nearly got off the ground with Ridley Scott directing. Scott is still apparently attached, but it’s on the ‘believe it when we see it’ pile at the moment.
