Disney have licensed two of their original shows for streaming on ITVX in a move away from the Disney+ model.

Two of Disney’s higher-profile streaming shows of the last couple of years, Extraordinary and Under The Banner Of Heaven, are set to debut on UK streamer ITVX in the first half of 2024, according to Variety.

Extraordinary will also get a broadcast release on ITV2.

The move is, so far, an unusual one for Disney+, and perhaps suggests the company is striving to find new revenue streams as streamers look to monetize the huge number of original films and shows they’ve been producing in the last few years.

Disney boss Bob Iger has basically said as much since he returned to his old job as CEO: “The streaming business, which I believe is the future and has been growing, is not delivering basically the kind of profitability or bottom line results that the linear business delivered for us over a few decades,” he said in February.

Extraordinary is a Disney+ UK original. Máiréad Tyers plays Jen, a 25-year-old in a world where everyone else has super powers – and she doesn’t. Disney+ have already commissioned a second season after the first debuted to strong reviews in January.

Under The Banner Of Heaven, meanwhile, is a true-crime drama starring Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar-Jones that arrived on Disney+ in 2022. When a woman and her baby are found murdered in a Utah suburb, a detective delves into a terrifying conspiracy at the heart of a local church.
