At least four actors get a James Bond 007 callback, as the final casting for Daniel Craig’s replacement looks set to get underway.

Typically, the day after I pen a news story suggesting the field for the next James Bond was down to three, it turns out it’s down to four. Yesterday’s report, that you can read here, threw in that Jack Lowden, Jacob Elordi  and a mystery unknown actor were the final candidates to take on the mantle of 007.

Then, further reports have suggested that Josh O’Connor remains in the mix. Furthermore, that long-time candidate Jacob Elordi doesn’t appear to be on the shortlist, and Callum Turner does.

Even though screenwriter Steven Knight suggested that the role has now been cast, it looks like we’re actually down to the very final auditions and test phase. That’s a process that’s said to be taking place over the coming week, with the four actors concerned each receiving a test offer.

This all hasn’t been confirmed of course by Amazon MGM Studios, but it’s popped up in the trade press. Tantalisingly, reporting says that ‘at least’ four actors have got the callback here.

The process is expected to be done and dusted, with an announcement, this side of Christmas. In fact, it’ll need to be. The plan remains to get whatever the next James Bond film is shooting in early 2027. Director Denis Villeneuve is nearly done with his work on Dune Part III, although if it has an awards run, that’s likely to eat into his time as well.

Still, he’s said recently that he’s keen to leave Dune behind after three films, and he’ll be jumping onto James Bond, metaphorically, and directing the next feature.

Lots of details still to fill in, of course, and with the movie unlikely to be with us until 2028 at the earliest, there’s plenty for the rumour mill to feast on between now and then
