A sequel to the 2003 body swap comedy Freaky Friday is reportedly on the way, with the original film’s two leads set to reprise their roles.

Despite there having been a lot of body swap movies over the years, 2003’s Freaky Friday would definitely be in the conversation to be placed on the genre’s Mount Rushmore. The original film – well, it’s a remake, but go with it – featured Lindsey Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis both doing terrific work and the film still boasts an army of admirers to this very day.

Just a couple of years ago we got Freaky, the Freaky Friday-inspired slasher horror take on the genre but we’ve never had a true sequel… until now. According to The New York Times a sequel is very much in development. We’ve heard noises this was happening since late 2022 but things definitely seem to be warming up with the news that emerging writer Elyse Hollander has been tapped up to pen the script whilst both Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsey Lohan are now said to be in talks to return, something Curtis herself confirmed back in February.

There’s ample reason for Disney to put another film into motion: the 2003 film took $160.8 million from a $26 million budget, impressive numbers indeed, not to mention that the film would have continued to be a solid earner ever since with disc sales and streaming deals. Whilst the 2003 version wasn’t Disney’s first crack at the 1972 novel, it is the most beloved so let’s wait and see if a sequel emerges.
