The rumours of Jennifer’s Body 2 are looking more and more accurate, as Diablo Cody reveals that she’s writing the sequel right now.
Some of us have been begging for another Diablo Cody horror film, particularly a sequel to 2009’s Jennifer’s Body. Rumours of another film about Megan Fox’s titular man-eating high schooler have been running wild for a while now, but it seems that we might be getting Jennifer’s Body 2 after all.
Dread Central reports that Diablo Cody has said that she’s writing the sequel right now. The outlet says that Cody revealed the news during a live panel in Los Angeles. It’s still not exactly confirmation that a sequel has been greenlit at a studio, but it’s certainly a step in the right direction.
In the original film, Fox’s Jennifer becomes demonically possessed and begins wreaking havoc and eating her classmates while her best friend Needy has to try and control the situation. Spoiler alert: it proves to be difficult.
Last year, Amanda Seyfried, who played Needy, promised that a sequel would definitely happen, and that she and Fox would return to their roles. In fact, Seyfried even joked the sequel could be called Needy’s Body. Maybe she’s the one enacting her revenge in the sequel? Men beware (again)!
On its release in 2009, Jennifer’s Body was considered a huge flop. Reviews for the Karyn Kusama-directed movie weren’t too favourable, and despite some heavily-marketed, steamy content, failed to bring in the cash.
In recent years, the film has been – rightfully! – reconsidered as a feminist revenge tale that boldly subverts some of your usual horror tropes.
Cody, who also wrote the brilliant Tully and Young Adult as well as the more recent Lisa Frankenstein, has been passionate about returning to the world of Jennifer and Needy for quite some time now. Dread Central doesn’t mention the writer giving away any plot details, but we can only hope the project keeps moving forward and finds a home sooner rather than later.
