A number of high-profile actors have moved into directing of late. Last week alone saw two award-winning stars bring their directorial debuts into UK cinemas. Kate Winslet tried her hand at directing with Goodbye June, while Scarlett Johansson’s Eleanor The Great was a Sundance hit earlier this year.
Kumail Nanjiani is the latest actor to step behind the camera. The comedian and star will be directing the horror movie, Howl – a film he was originally going to appear in.
“[Directing] was like this vague thing I wanted to do, but it wasn’t until I read this script that came to me to act in that I was like, ‘Okay, I don’t know if I know how to direct, but I think I know how to direct this movie. That’s kind of how it happened. I just read the right the thing,” Nanjiani told Deadline’s Comedy Means Business podcast (here via Bloody Disgusting).
Nanjiani previously also co-wrote The Big Sick with his wife Emily V Gordon. The film detailed the early days of the couple’s relationship, especially Emily’s diagnosis of Still’s disease. It’s a great film, and worth putting on your watchlist if you haven’t caught it yet.
Nanjiani also described himself and Gordon as “huge genre fans”, though directing a horror movie wasn’t initially on his to-do list.
“It wasn’t like I was specifically looking to direct a horror movie or anything; it was just this movie. I get this movie. It’s got a very specific tone, and I was like, ‘I see this tone in my head. I know exactly how this should be.’”
There’s no word on what Howl might be about, but one might expect it’s about something… howling. Production is expected to start next year, and Nanjiani and Gordon’s production company Winter Coat Films will likely also produce.
We’ll bring you more on Howl as we get it.
