Action and heart feature heavily in the final trailer for the upcoming GI Joe spin-off movie Snake Eyes, set to release next month.
From the outside, you’d be forgiven for rolling your eyes a little at this one. A spin-off movie following a mute character from a lapsed movie series that nobody was banging the drum for could seem like a cynically-hollow bit of studio franchise building. But actually, what we’ve seen from the upcoming Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, (apart from maybe the title) has looked promising.
Call us a sucker for ninja films, but this one looks like it could be fun, with the final trailer showing an element of emotion and heart that the previous action-filled trailers didn’t. Of course, there’s plenty of action and fisticuffs too.
Henry Golding plays the title character, replacing Ray Park who portrayed Snake Eyes in the two G.I. Joe films thus far. Andrew Koji plays Storm Shadow, his nemesis, and the film looks set to explore the genesis of that famed rivalry. Whilst it may well ultimately be just another G.I. Joe film, the bitter backstory between the two characters was always one of the more interesting aspects of G.I. Joe (as feuding ninjas tend to be). Hopefully, this will give the film an extra dimension.
The film, which shot in Vancouver and Japan throughout 2019 and 2020, is reportedly already getting a follow-up, with Paramount seemingly keen to continue leveraging the franchise. The film arrives in the US on July 23rd, and we get it in the UK on August 20th.
