Christopher Nolan and Christopher Frayling are listed as having made a four-part series about British cinema for BBC Radio 4, due out this month.
Iโve zipped back through the archives and canโt find any mention that this was happening, but Sir Christopher Nolan and historian Sir Christopher Frayling โ will drop the Sirs going forward โ have come together for a new programme on Radio 4.
Nolan is currently in post-production on The Odyssey. Meanwhile, Fraylingโs latest book on Sergio Leone, titled Sergio Leone By Himself, is quite brilliant.
The pair seem to have made a series of four programmes entitled Hollywood And The Adland Five.
Weโve not had any kind of announcement, but a listing has appeared on the BBC website about the series, which is illustrated with a picture of Tony Scott directing Tom Cruise on the set of Top Gun.
Guesswork would suggest, given these ingredients, that Christopher Nolan and Christopher Frayling might be looking at the breed of British directors who moved from the world of commercials to feature films. However, in lieu of an official BBC announcement or anything, there’s only this synopsis to go on:
The UK’s most prominent director Sir Christopher Nolan and the leading cultural historian Sir Christopher Frayling celebrate one of the biggest and boldest eras in movie history.

There are four episodes.
On Monday 25th August, we get Transforming Ads, Transforming Movies.
Then on Tuesday 26th August, itโs The British Are Coming! (a nod to screenwriter Colin Wellandโs infamous Oscar acceptance speech after picking up an Academy Award for writing Chariots Of Fire, Iโm presuming.)
Wednesday 27th Augustโs episode is A New Brand Of Moviemaking.
Then it rounds off with The Need For Speed on Thursday 28th August.
All episodes go out at 7.15pm on their respective evenings. Running time is 28 minutes apiece, and them theyโll all be on the BBCโs radio iPlayer service or Sounds or whatever itโs called after that.
You can find the page for the show on the BBC’s website.
Looking forward to these, and will update with any official BBC announcement as and when we get it.
