Marlon Wayans to star in GOAT

Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions is producing the psychological horror GOAT, with Marlon Wayans in the lead.

This isn’t an unveiling of Jordan Peele’s next directorial outing for Universal, but here’s a story about an intriguing new project that will be produced under the filmmaker’s Monkeypaw banner.

GOAT is set to star Marlon Wayans (who you can see pictured in the TV show Marlon) while Justin Tipping will direct. Tipping co-wrote and directed Kicks, another film (like last year’s Air) focused on the mythical status attached to basketball shoes.

In their upcoming project, the focus will be on a mythical athlete rather than their shoes, as ‘the film centres on an up-and-coming young athlete who is invited to train with a team’s retiring star, who will be played by Wayans.’

It hasn’t been announced yet who will play the rookie, but according to Deadline, which first reported the story, screen tests are said to be ongoing.

The project was recently delayed by Universal, due to strikes-related reshuffling we’d imagine. No new date has yet been disclosed, but the public announcement of the project shows that confidence is high in the film – and why not? Even though we know little about it, the premise sounds great.

We should probably add here, while it’s become a popular term outside of sporting terminology, GOAT of course is an acronym for ‘Greatest Of All Time’, just in case you were wondering why Marlon Wayans has signed up to play a bad-tempered ruminant.

Monkeypaw Productions ramped up the frequency of its film releases prior to the turbulence of 2023, with the production company releasing no fewer than three feature films in 2022.

Those being Nope (which Peele himself directed), Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul and Wendell And Wild.

It has several other projects in development that are equally tantalising (beyond Peele’s next outing as director). There’s the remake of Wes Craven’s The People Under The Stairs and Nanny director Nikyatu Jusu’s vampire project, Suicide By Sunlight.

We’ll bring you more on GOAT as we hear it, but this one looks set for a release sometime in 2025.
