Matt Reeves has taken a moment to address the status of The Batman 2 and the next Cloverfield film.

Matt Reeves is currently putting together the story that will take him back to the world of The Batman for another film set in his perpetually gloomy Gotham City.

Whilst Reeves has already said that we shouldn’t expect a sequel until 2025, the writing process is underway with the filmmaker hinting that Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne will be the beating heart of the sequel. The character of Wayne featured less prominently in The Batman than in other incarnations of the Dark Knight and whilst Pattinson’s take on the Caped Crusader has impressed fans, we’re looking forward to seeing him do more as his alter-ego.

In just one outing, Pattinson’s performance in The Batman already has him on the Mount Rushmore of Batmen for some, whilst others will need more convincing. More screen time with his take on Bruce Wayne won’t hurt his case at all in this regard.

Reeves’ small screen endeavours to flesh out the world of Gotham City are ongoing too, although their status is unclear with HBO Max cutting back on its budget for new programmes. Reeves’ planned Gotham PD television show was shelved back in March of 2022 but he stated then he was working on other projects such as an Arkham Asylum programme, although we don’t know the exact status of this as of right now.

Cloverfield, another of Reeves’ past projects, is also set to make a return with a new sequel and the filmmaker has been chatting about that project too, although he doesn’t seem to have any involvement.

“I have no idea,” said Reeves when asked if he knew much about Paramount’s plans for the sequel which were announced back in September. “I’m super excited about us doing more, and I can’t give you information about that of course because that’s the way Cloverfield works. To be honest with you, you never know what you’re going to do. Even though my work is all genre work, I have to feel something personal about it. Cloverfield is very much about my anxieties.”

We do know that Beast's Babak Anvari will be directing the new Cloverfield but from his statements, it looks like Reeves isn’t involved at a production level.

Whilst he hasn’t ruled out returning one day, it’s likely that the world of The Batman will be keeping him busy for a few years to come. Perhaps the inbound announcement on the future of the DC Universe will reveal something more concrete regarding Reeves’ Gotham City projects. That news is expected to land sometime in the next fortnight and we’ll let you know just as soon as it does.
