It was all the way back in 2014 that two movie moments happened. Firstly, up until this very year, it was the last time that Phil Lord and Christopher Miller has directed a movie. And it was also the year that the sequel 22 Jump Street came out.
Move forward to 2026. Lord and Miller returned to directing after over a decade with the hugely successful Project Hail Mary. And now we learn that the Jump Street movies are coming back too.
24 Jump Street, then, won’t be directed by Lord and Miller (although they are producing), as instead Rodney Rothman will be in the director’s chair. He was one of the co-directors on 2018’s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, that won he, Lord, Miller, Peter Ramsey and Bob Perischetti Oscars for their trouble. He also co-wrote 22 Jump Street.
Jonah Hill is co-writing the script along with Rothman and Meghan Malloy. Hill, Channing Tatum and Ice Cube are all expected to return in front of the camera.
Two things, though.
Firstly, the end credits of 22 Jump Street thoroughly skewered any future sequels, and that might in turn explain why 23 Jump Street is being missed in the numbering!
Secondly, there was talk for a long time about a crossover movie between Men In Black and the Jump Street films. We don’t make this stuff up, you can read about here. Lord and Miller always gave the impression they were attracted to that, as it fitted their ethos of sounding like a terrible idea on paper (see also, the original 21 Jump Street, plus The LEGO Movie.) 24 Jump Street, on paper, sounds like a more conventional direction.
We wait and see which way it goes, of course. Still some way to go, though. As per this Variety piece, an offer has gone in to Channing Tatum to come back, but he hasn’t signed on the dotted line yet. For the story to pop up in the trades though, Sony Pictures must fancy its chances of getting the gang back together.
More as we hear it…
