Filmmakers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are working on a new Star Trek movie, which they say will feature a new cast and inspiration from Crimson Tide.
Although the Star Trek franchise has had a busy old time in the world of TV, there hasn’t been a cinema-released feature film since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond.
An assortment of filmmakers have tried to get a film going over the past decade – including, famously, Quentin Tarantino – but as the Star Trek franchise celebrates its 60th anniversary, the USS Enterprise remains in drydock.
Last year, though, it was announced that Game Night and Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves filmmakers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are set to write and direct a new Star Trek movie.
Although their take isn’t in production yet, it is in development, and the pair have talked a bit about their plans for a new Star Trek movie.
Speaking to Inverse, Daley and Goldstein said confirmed that their film will feature a new cast of characters – so, as reported last year, the likes of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban (pictured above) are out.

They also suggested that their script would take the form of a dark thriller inspired by the likes of Crimson Tide and Training Day – both films about the abuse of power (and both starring Denzel Washington).
Their Star Trek will explore “Starfleet and any institution that has existed for a long time,” Daley said.
“I think the portrayal of Starfleet and the people that work within it have always been generally idealised versions of what the future could be,” he added. “And while this [script] isn’t a cynical or nihilistic take on it, I think it does acknowledge that there are some bad apples in every institution that can have a strong voice and can really make an impact on that institution and everything it stands for.”
Daley also said that he and Goldstein’s Star Trek would take place “in real time” – perhaps placing it in a similar subgenre to Locke, Phone Booth and TV’s 24.
“It just is a whole other look at what a Star Trek movie could be without betraying the fundamentals of what it should be.”
It sounds like a tonal departure from the pair’s earlier work together, which has all been in the comedy genre; Goldstein and Daley’s latest film is Mayday, an action comedy out on Apple TV from the 4th September.
Their mention of Crimson Tide and Training Day suggests we could be in for a claustrophobic and tense take on Trek. We’ll bring you more as we hear it.
