Update: Mere weeks after news emerged that the Star Trek film franchise is to be rebooted – meaning expensive stars like Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban are out – comes another potential milestone. Although it’s still early days for Paramount’s next entry in the 46 year-old series of movies, it appears to have a director.
Or, according to Deadline's sources, pair of directors. The outlet reports that Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley attached to write and produce.
The pair previously wrote Spider-Man: Homecoming before writing and directing Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves in 2023. The latter wasn’t a hit, but its mix of action, fantasy and humour has made it a firm-favourite among those who’ve sought it out.
That film could provide a hint as to the direction of the next Star Trek: light, entertaining and self-aware.
More on this as we get it.
Our original story follows…
5th November 2025: When Skydance closed its multi-billion dollar purchase of Paramount Pictures, one of the certainties – along with the laying off of lots of good people – was the unlocking of big franchises. The Star Trek big screen franchise very much amongst them.
Star Trek has stalled on the big screen since 2016’s middling Star Trek Beyond, which a bunch of attempts to get things going again. In hindsight, the infamous Quentin Tarantino Star Trek that never was probably held things up, but also there’s been talk of a total reboot, as well as a possible return for the Chris Pine-led ‘Kelvin’ crew for a fourth film.
Well, we’re back to square one, and perhaps in the end that’s what’s needed to get Star Trek movies moving again. We learn this morning that Paramount is looking to get a fresh film in the series moving, and that it won’t be involving Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and that particular crew. Instead, it’s going to be a full reboot, and presumably one independent of the assorted Star Trek television series that are currently on the go.
What we don’t have at this stage is any personnel, but it looks a decent bet as well that JJ Abrams won’t be directing any of the new films (having helmed two of the last three). Instead, an actual fresh start, and you’d imagine with an eye on several films going forward, rather than just making this a one-off.
It sits alongside Paramount looking at more World War Z and Top Gun films at the very least too, with a possible Days Of Thunder 2 (that I don’t remember anyone asking for, in truth) also on the stove.
As for Star Trek? Well, we’ve sort of been here before over the last decade or so. But new money, new intent, and a sporting chance of a new movie.
