A sequel to the cult classic, The Adventures Of Priscilla Queen Of The Desert is in the works. Thirty years after the original film’s release, it’s also been announced that its cast and writer-director Stephan Elliot are all returning.

Speaking to Deadline, Elliot revealed that a sequel is in the works, saying “I’m not repeating myself, we’ll start the new film in Australia, but by God, we’re going on one helluva journey. The original cast is on board, I’ve got a script that everybody likes, we’re still working out deals. … It’s happening”.

Although nothing is official, Elliot’s statement seems pretty definitive, and confirms that Stamp, Weaving and Pearce are all on board.

The Adventures Of Priscilla Queen Of The Desert was and is a remarkable 1990s independent movie success story. Made on the road for a modest budget, it has, over time, become something of a worldwide phenomenon.

Written and directed by Stephan Elliot, The film follows two drag queens and a transgender woman as they board the titular bus, Priscilla, to journey across the Australian outback. They meet all kinds of characters on their journey from Sydney to Alice Springs for a job at the Lasseters Hotel Casino Resort.

The film starred Hugo Weaving, Terence Stamp as transgender woman Bernadette Bassenger, and also launched the film career of Guy Pearce after many years playing the affable Mike Young on Neighbours.

Priscilla proved popular not only for its strong characters, but it also garnered acclaim for its positive representation of the LGBTQ community. It picked up the Oscar for Best Costume Design.

In 2006, Elliot and Allan Scott adapted the film into stage show which toured the world, and went on to become the most successful Australian musical of all time. A new stage show based on the film recently premiered debuted in London. Titled Priscilla The Party, the show is described as “an all-singing, all-dancing immersive party and musical theatre extravaganza”.

Most recently, it was announced that Priscilla is to return to UK cinemas this summer. We’ll keep you updated as we hear more about the sequel.
