With positive reviews and solid box office returns too, Free Guy has done enough to warrant a sequel.

Free Guy hit cinemas over the weekend and the buzz surrounding the film has been largely positive. Critics and fans alike seemed to enjoy it and the movie is sitting atop the box office charts, in the US and other markets. It’s a fun film that, in a clever way, does a better job of depicting video games and video game culture than many of the attempted movie adaptations, usually based on licensed video game franchises, that have come before.

Disney seems pleased with the film’s reception too, both critically and commercially, and as such, seem to have reached out to the key creatives behind the movie to explore the possibility of commissioning a sequel. The film’s producer and star, Ryan Reynolds, announced this on Twitter, highlighting the irony of his continual trumpeting of the film as a standalone, original story, rather than it being just another franchise based on existing intellectual property:

The film’s director, Shawn Levy, responded with a ‘Yuuuuuuuup’ on the social media platform, whilst Disney itself seemingly confirming this, with the Twitter account for 20th Century Studios, its  subsidiary studio that released the film, retweeting Reynolds.

So, it looks like we’ll be seeing more Free Guy at some point. Whilst more Ryan Reynolds in a clever, well-told story is never a bad thing, part of Free Guy's charm was the uniqueness of its idea. If you’ve seen the film, do let us know in the comments what your thoughts are about a possible sequel. Either way though, with Disney reportedly behind the idea, you can bet it will happen at some point.
