Saoirse Ronan’s casting is the first to be announced for historical drama Blitz, set to shoot later this year.
Saoirse Ronan has been announced as the lead actor in director Steve McQueen’s next project, which will be titled
Blitz. As you might expect, McQueen will be writing, directing and producing the project, which will be an original story based around the life on Londoners during World War II when German air assaults became part of everyday life.
McQueen will be working with production company New Regency once more, the company who backed
Widows, as well as his Oscar-winning feature
12 Years Slave. Blitz will mark McQueen’s first return to feature film making since
Widows, as since then he has been focused on creating his
Small Axe anthology of films for the BBC, as well as working on several documentaries.
Ronan can currently be seen putting in a brilliant turn in the theatrical whodunnit,
See How They Run. One film she won’t be appearing in though is
Barbie, currently being directed by her regular collaborator, Greta Gerwig. Ronan recently revealed that she was set to make a cameo appearance in the film as an alternate version of the title character (being played by Margot Robbie) but had to forego the opportunity because of scheduling conflicts.
The nature of her role in
Blitz is as yet unknown although she is set to star alongside a newcomer who is yet to be announced. We’ll bring you more details on
Blitz, including further casting, as we hear it, but we do know that the film is set to enter production later this year. The project is being financed by Apple but given the studio’s recent distribution strategy, we’re quietly confident that
Blitz will get some sort of theatrical run. Fingers crossed.
