Regular franchise director Kevin Greutert has made some potentially revealing comments about Saw XI’s production and upcoming release date. More on it below.

Saw X, directed by franchise veteran Kevin Greutert, was a pleasant surprise for both audiences and Lionsgate as the film racked up decent reviews and people showed up to watch Jigsaw hack up some more people, this time in Mexico.

Another instalment was confirmed by Lionsgate soon after the film’s release, with Greutert set to return as director. Greutert told us in an exclusive interview that he was keen on making one, and that Jigsaw was “crucial” for the franchise.

Saw XI was supposed to premiere in September 2024, giving the production just a year to get it made, but Lionsgate eventually delayed the film to 26th September 2025.

As the original Saw turns 20 this week and heads back into cinemas, many outlets have paid their respects for such a long-running franchise and the excellent first film. Greutert took to X/Twitter, to retweet one of these articles by RogerEbert.com, with the words “Wow, I hope that this article is the push we need for me to finally make Saw XI!”

It seems like a strange thing to say for a film with a confirmed release date that’s less than a year away. Granted, Saw films aren’t particularly expensive or time-consuming to make, but you’d think there are plans in place to film it soon enough.

Underneath the tweet, fans are questioning whether the film will make its billed 2025 release date. Greutert replied to one commenter: “It can if we make it.”

Deadline reported in April 2024 that Saw XI would be delayed and was still in development “to make it perfect.” In an extensive interview with LA Times earlier in October, star Tobin Bell, who has portrayed Jigsaw in every Saw film apart from spin-off film Spiral, confirmed he would be the “main part of it”.

Greutert’s tweets aren’t exactly confirmations either way. Saw XI may still make its September release date and there certainly isn’t any official word that it won’t, but if the film’s director says the production needs a “push” to “finally” make it, it doesn’t seem particularly promising, does it?

More on Saw XI as we hear it, including any release date changes.
