The key trio of Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy are reportedly all in talks to return for Shrek 5.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has been doing far better than expected numbers for Dreamworks Animation, with the Shrek spin-off movie currently closing in on the half-billion dollar mark. The film has proved to be a terrific bit of business with great reviews certainly helping the film’s success, not to mention that it seems to have landed during something of a dry period for children’s films. That’s a period that’s just ending now with today’s release of The Super Mario Bros.
All in all, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has cleaned up and so perhaps it isn’t surprising that hot on the heels of the film’s success, it looks like we might be seeing another film in the mainline Shrek series. According to Illumination head honcho, Chris Meledandri, who is also a creative partner to Dreamworks Animation, an offer has gone out to the series’ three key players.
“We anticipate the cast coming back,” Meledrandi told Variety. “Talks are starting now, and every indication that we’ve gotten is there’s tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return.”
Whilst a fifth entry in the Shrek series would mean Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz returning, the third lead, Eddie Murphy could be pulling double-duty as fan favourite Donkey, with Meledandri revealing that they are also looking at a spin-off film featuring the character.
He also hinted that more films might be on the way set within the world of The Secret Life of Pets, not to mention Sing 3. That’s a lot of animating to be getting on with so official announcements on some of those projects could be some way down the line but rest assured, we’ll let you know as and when these projects are confirmed.
