Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse is the planned third film in the animated trilogy ā but it sounds like the problems are piling up.
UPDATE: Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse composer Daniel Pemberton has addressed the reported delays to the film. Pembertonās tweet, which you can see below, throws Jeff Sneiderās report of a new delay into question. According to Sneiderās newsletter The Insneider, Sony had scrapped large sections of the film, making it unlikely for Beyond The Spider-Verse to hit cinemas until 2027.
Pemberton doesnāt mention a solid release date, his post does imply that weāll be seeing the film sooner than that, but Sony or the filmās directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson havenāt commented on the situation. Weāll keep you posted if they do.
Our original story followsā¦
10.9.2024: Without the collaborative aid of Marvel Studios, itās been a long time since Sony put out a truly successful Spider-Man film. 2012ās The Amazing Spider-Man kicked off Andrew Garfieldās two-film tenure as the titular webhead, made decent money and earned okay reviews but even that was over a decade ago.
Sonyās solo efforts since have garnered reactions ranging from ambivalent to mocking, but no notices that have been particularly positive.
Thereās one exception of course: Sonyās two animated Spider-Verse films. 2018ās Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and 2023ās Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse both released to huge critical acclaim and substantial profits.
Audiences loved them and they managed the tricky feat of successfully introducing Miles Morales, a non-Peter Parker version of Spider-Man, with such style and grace that a live action version of the character is almost bound to happen at some point given how popular he has become.
However, in the summer of last year reports emerged that all was not well with the planned third film in the series, Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse.
Originally slated for release this year, the production was said to be struggling with the leadership style of its producers, Chris Miller and Phil Lord, whose improvisational working style was causing time-consuming revisions to the filmās animation workflow, making a delay inevitable.
Then, just last month came a report which suggested that the duoās relationship with Sony was perhpas more fractured than anybody suspected. News broke that claimed that Lord and Miller would be ending their long-standing relationship with Sony after the planned Spider-Man: Noir live-action spin-off project starring Nicolas Cage was complete.
Thatās a relationship which stretches back over a decade and the story seems to be compounded by todayās report, which comes courtesy of The InSneider. The report states that Sony may push the planned third film into 2027 because it is scrapping all progress on the project so far. āCreative differencesā are said to be the reason behind the project being restarted, an issue that weāve seen Lord and Miller encounter before when they left the production of Lucasfilmās Solo: A Star Wars Story mid-production.
The report states that the āproduction team is apparently relieved by the scrapping as it will now give them more time to work on the film.ā
It also moves Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse out of the way of Sonyās next live-action Spider-Man film which could well have found itās new director in the form of Destin Daniel Cretton, the helmer of Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings.
That film is said to be aimijg for a 2026 release, which means Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse's 2027 release date wonāt steal any of that projectās thunder. Hopefully, starting over wonāt be the team behind the project under any additional stress as they look to complete what could be one of those cinematic unicorns: the perfect film trilogy. Weāll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
