Expect plenty more Squid Game in your future. Netflix has renewed Squid Game: The Challenge for season 2.

Netflix found somewhat unexpected success with its Korean thriller series Squid Game which became a worldwide phenomenon and even bagged the streaming service some pretty historical Emmys after it won in 2022 for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

A second season of the series was quickly announced, but Netflix also created a real reality TV show based on the one seen in the show. 456 players were selected to take part in challenges inspired by the ones seen in the fictional version.

Squid Game: The Challenge has been popular, and the finale is available to stream as of today (6th December). To celebrate the finale, Netflix has also announced that another season of Squid Game: The Challenge is coming.

“There was no red light in our decision to greenlight season two of Squid Game: The Challenge, the most ambitious unscripted show we’ve premiered at Netflix,” said Brandon Riegg, Netflix VP of Nonfiction Series. “We’re so excited to continue the franchise of Squid Game with our team in Korea, and producers at Studio Lambert and The Garden for this epic competition series.”

One of the most popular challenges in the fictional show included traditional dalgona candy shapes that the competitors had to separate without breaking. If they failed, they were eliminated and killed. Thankfully, Squid Game: The Challenge didn’t go quite that far, but the contestants did also have to work with dalgona candy as well as compete in other familiar challenges like Red Light, Green Light and Marbles.

The reality TV show did come under fire after it came out that players allegedly suffered hypothermia and potential nerve damage and were planning on suing the streaming service. Deadline also reported in February that an independent safety inspection was conducted after medical incidents on set. No lawsuit was ever filed.

Casting for the next series is now open, so if you want to give it a go, you can head over to this website. If you’re LA-based, Netflix has also launched Squid Game: The Trials, a live fan experience where you can take part in six immersive “engagements” as well as roam a Night Market with themed food and beverages. A video game based on the franchise is also in the works.

No date for Squid Game season 2 or Squid Game: The Challenge season 2, but we’ll keep you updated on those.
