Could we see the Jean-Luc Picard character appearing in a cinematic swansong? The possibility certainly exists, with a Picard movie script penned.

Despite being 83 years old, Patrick Stewart isn’t quite ready to let go of Star Trek’s Jean-Luc Picard just yet. Only recently, the veteran actor was talking about the rather disappointing experience of reprising his role as Professor X in less than ideal circumstances, but that doesn’t seem to have put him off from returning to either of his iconic roles.

Those two roles are of course the leader of the X-Men and also Jean-Luc Picard, the noble Starfleet legend who Stewart most recently returned to in three series of Picard. However, the actor mentioned several times throughout 2023 that he was keen to give the character one final cinematic outing, and it looks like he could get his wish.

Speaking on the HappySadConfused podcast, Stewart revealed that a Picard movie script focusing on the character has been written and that he expects to see it shortly.

“I heard, only last night, about a script that is being written specifically with the actor, Patrick, to play in it [as Picard]. I’ve been told to expect it within a week or so, and I’m so excited, because it sounds like the kind of project where the experimentation that I want to do will be essential for this kind of material.”

Just to be clear, Stewart is briefly talking about himself in the third person there in case you were confused by his wording.

Given the woes Paramount has caused for itself while trying to get a fourth Star Trek film in the Kelvin timeline up and running, green-lighting a lower-budget Picard movie with modest ambitions could prove to be an adroit move.

How much there is to this story remains to be seen, but Stewart seems confident that wheels are definitely turning, even if it looks like the film wouldn’t be a reunion of Star Trek: The Next Generation given that that the third season of Picard already gave us that on the small screen. We hope this story does have some legs, though, and when we hear more regarding this project, we’ll let you know.
