Filming Doctor Strange And The Multiverse Of Madness was “frustrating and disappointing,” Patrick Stewart says, but hints that Professor X may show up in Deadpool 3.

When Patrick Stewart got to utter the immortal, poetic line “Save the girl and get to the Book of Vishanti” in Doctor Strange And The Multiverse Of Madness, he wasn’t surrounded by Hollywood stars as it appeared on screen. In fact, all of Stewart’s scenes in Sam Raimi’s Marvel sequel were filmed in isolation, the actor confirmed on a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused Podcast.

“It was alone,” Stewart said, gloomily. “I think the big scene, each one of the leading actors had the same experience. They were shot on their own. It was frustrating and disappointing, but that’s how it has been. The last few years have been challenging.”

The challenging few years Stewart refers to there are, of course, a nod to the global pandemic, which was at its height as filming on Multiverse Of Madness got underway in 2020. As a result, numerous scenes had to be shot while still conforming to social distancing rules, meaning the ensemble scene with Stewart’s Professor X at its centre had to be digitally pieced together after the fact. Given that acting’s all about interaction and chemistry between human beings, it’s easy to see why the situation would be a frustrating one for Stewart.

Despite all of this, Stewart hasn’t ruled out appearing as Professor X once again. When asked whether he’d received a phone call about reprising the role in the upcoming Deadpool 3, Stewart said, “It has come up. There’s been a process. But the last two or three years have been so difficult with the labour problems and the health problems, and Covid.”

It’s been known for a while that Deadpool 3 will contain a number of cameos, including Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and even Jennifer Garner as Elektra, so an appearance from Stewart wouldn’t be entirely unexpected. It remains to be seen whether the Merc with the Mouth sequel will reignite last year’s debate about the relative merits of cameo porn.

Deadpool 3 is out in UK cinemas on the 26th July 2024.
