Over half a decade since anybody could write this words, a new Star Wars film from Lucasfilm has wrapped production: The Mandalorian & Grogu.


It’s been some six years since a website such as this could write these words, but a new Star Wars film has actually wrapped filming. The movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu, is directed by Jon Favreau and has been in production the back end of 2024. It now heads into heavy post-production ahead of its 2026 release date.

Whether you’re a Star Wars devotee or not, there’s a morbid fascination I’d suggest in just how many potential Star Wars films have come and gone in this six year window. Take a company like Pixar: it’s only ever come out publicly about one film it developed and then scrapped. The strange thing with the world of Star Wars – appreciating there’s a lot of interest in it – is how many of the near misses have played out in the public eye.

In a world where it’s possible to make a Predator film pretty much without anyone noticing, Disney has nonetheless played a game of talking up Star Wars projects without making the bulk of them. Maybe it’s to beef up the share price, or improve flagging morale. Either way, it’s bizarre that a sizeable entertainment entity such as Disney would be making the same mistake time and time again. Where Star Wars has been busier and more productive is in its smaller screen productions, and of course that’s where Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu originates from. But still, Jon Favreau has succeeded where so many before him have stumbled: he’s got a Star Wars motion picture through the Lucasfilm infrastructure.

The movie itself is now scheduled for release on 22nd May 2026, and so we’ve got some way to wait for it yet. However, it’s also not entirely clear – again – what the next film on the Star Wars production line will be. Still: progress! Will keep you posted as we hear more…
