Stephen Chow is working on a sequel to his breakout hit Shaolin Soccer, over 20 years since the original first hit.

Producer/director/screenwriter/actor Stephen Chow made four films before he became known internationally in 2001 for making Shaolin Soccer, a hi-impact blend of kung fu and sports comedy. He then parodied the genre as a whole with 2004’s Kung Fu Hustle, which featured fight choreography by the legendary Sammo Hung and Yuen Woo Ping.

Chow has made only a handful of features since, and he is now revisiting his past successes by developing a sequel to Shaolin Soccer.

Titled Shaolin’s Women’s Soccer, Chow is currently conducting a worldwide search for the female stars for his new film. No word on timescales, but given the exquisite original, it’s a film unlikely to be missed.

It was reported in 2019 that he was also developing a sequel to Kung Fu Hustle, but no other details have emerged. We’ll keep you posted on both projects…
