How do you make a distinctly family un-friendly movie presentable for a primetime TV audience? The answer, according to The Adventures Of Cliff Booth's first trailer, is to hurriedly scratch out anything unsavoury from the trailer.
This is our first official look at Quentin Tarantino’s sequel to Once Upon A Time In America – a film for which he’s handed the directing duties over to some up-and-coming filmmaker named David Fincher. Never heard of him.
As proven by a billboard advert for Looking For Mr Goodbar, the comedy-thriller’s set in 1977, and follows Brad Pitt’s titular Cliff – formerly the stuntman and best buddy of washed-up TV actor, Rick Dalton.
With a taste for danger, Cliff appears to make money as a racing driver these days, though he still has dealings with glamorous Hollywood types – rumour is, he’s now a ‘fixer’, tasked with keeping salacious stories out of the press. Criminal gangs also feature, with the antagonists including a pair of giggling hooligans with matching moustaches.

Cut to the sounds of Henry Mancini’s Peter Gunn theme tune, it’s about as Tarantino-esque as you can get without his physical presence behind the camera. There’s a Big Kahuna Burger outlet and affectionate nods to other movies (Black Sunday is also playing at an LA theatre – a John Frankenheimer thriller that Tarantino previously referenced in Kill Bill: Volume 1).
The faux censorship feels like the kind of thing he’d come up with, too: it’s designed to look as though someone – possibly the editor – has used a needle to literally scratch out such contentious things as cigarettes and nudity from the celluloid itself. With younger generations having grown up in a digital era of pixels rather than film, it’s the kind of detail that’s easily overlooked.
The Adventures Of Cliff Booth is a Netflix film, so we don’t yet know whether it’ll get a cinema release – we’re hoping for at least a brief run on screens that aren’t in living rooms or pockets. We don’t have a release date yet, either – the trailer simply says, ‘Coming soon’. We’ll update you as we hear more.
