The Croods 2 release moves forward: first trailer lands

Universal moves the release of The Croods: A New Age forward in America, and the trailer for the film is now with us too.

Here’s a story we’ve not been able to write very much this year: a major movie studio has just moved a release forward.

The film in question is the long-mooted sequel to DreamWorks’ The Croods, that’s going by the name of The Croods: A New Age. In the US at least, Universal has now moved the film from its planned December 23rd release date to November 25th. It’s still set for February of next year in the UK as things stand.

UPDATE: And here’s the trailer for the film, that’s been released. With it comes the confirmation that the UK release is still indeed February 5th 2021.

The US release date change is an interesting move for two reasons. Firstly, it strongly suggests that Disney and Pixar will indeed move the release of the film Soul as had been speculated yesterday. That Universal looks like it’s pre-empted the Soul change by moving into its spot.

Secondly though, thanks to Universal’s new deal with cinema exhibitors in the US, it also means that it’s likely to be able to get The Croods: A New Age available on premium video on demand in the US in time for Christmas. That cinemas will get a few weeks of exclusivity thanks to a November release, and Universal can have the film in homes for the end of December.

That’s not been officially confirmed as of yet, but it certainly seems to be the plan. More news as we hear it.
