Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist reboot/repossession is taking shape, as Sasha Calle joins the growing cast.

Update: These Exorcist casting updates are coming in almost exactly one month apart. In January came the news that Scarlett Johansson is in talks to star in Mike Flanagan’s possession reboot; in February, word of Chiwetel Ejiofor and Diane Lane.

Now we can add Sasha Calle to the list, according to Deadline and other outlets. The actor played Supergirl in the otherwise forgettable superhero outing, The Flash, and was recently seen in Joe Carnahan’s The Rip, alongside Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

There’s no word on who Calle will play in the new Exorcist, but then again, plot details are thin on the ground in general. Maybe we should start laying bets on who ends up being a vessel of evil, and who will play the religious types charged with evicting the demon. Our money’s on Jacobi Jupe, who was cast last month and can be seen in Chloe Zhao’s Hamnet, as Pazuzu’s latest victim.

Our earlier story follows…

5th February 2026: There’s just over a year to go until a new take on The Exorcist possesses cinemas, and so writer-director Mike Flanagan has been busy gathering up a starry cast. We heard a few weeks ago that Scarlett Johansson had made the list; she’s now joined by Chiwetel Ejiofor, Diane Lane and young actor Jacobi Jupe, who recently scored the title role in the Oscar-nominated Hamnet.

Understandably, plot specifics haven’t been revealed so far, though The Hollywood Reporter reckons that Ejiofor will play a former convict and current priest, while Johansson will play Jupe’s mother. Does this mean that it’ll be Jupe succumbing to a bout of demon possession, and that Ejiofor will be the titular exorcist this time around?

Whatever happens, THR adds that the new Exorcist won’t be a remake or a sequel, but rather a separate story set in the same ‘universe’ brought to the screen by writer William Peter Blatty and director William Friedkin in 1973. That universe, if we can really call it that, comes with a certain set of expectations, though, so we can be pretty certain that at least one of the above actors will be barfing up pea soup on the 12th March 2027.

We’ll bring you more on The Exorcist reboot as we get it.

Previously…

19th January 2026: It’s been a while since we heard anything about Mike Flanagan’s new The Exorcist movie and the news wasn’t exactly good as the film experienced some delays, but things are looking up.

Variety now has the scoop that Flanagan’s The Exorcist movie will hit cinemas 12th March 2027. Scarlett Johansson and Hamnet’s Jacobi Jupe will star in the director’s “radical new take” on the classic horror franchise. The film doesn’t seem to have an official title yet, but we do know that it will be set in the same universe as William Friedkin’s original The Exorcist.

Flanagan, who is also producing and writing the script, last directed 2025’s delightful The Life Of Chuck, but The Exorcist will see the director return to directing horror on the big screen for the first time since 2019’s Doctor Sleep. Not that Flanagan’s has been taking it easy; DC’s Clayface, which Flanagan provided the script for, is out next year and post-production is underway on the Carrie TV series Flanagan has been developing.

The Exorcist hasn’t had a great time on the big screen since Friedkin’s 1973 classic. Hollywood has produced numerous sequels to the original, but none have managed to capture the sheer terror of the first film. The latest attempt was in 2023 with The Exorcist: Believer and despite a lot of potential and David Gordon Green’s steady direction, it lacked any real horror.

Flanagan has proved himself an excellent horror storyteller, so there’s hope. We won’t find out what “radical new take” actually means until the film hits screens next year, but we’ve got our fingers crossed that Flanagan delivers something great with this.
