The Inbetweeners 3? A new movie might be on the cards, as a fresh deal is inked for The Inbetweeners to return.
Itโs been 11 years now since The Inbetweeners 2 landed in UK cinema, to an enormous box office opening weekend. While it may not have done sizeable numbers worldwide, the movie โ written and directed by Iain Morris and Damon Beesley โ outperformed Michael Bayโs Transformers: Age Of Extinction (the latter of which went on to gross over $1bn worldwide.)
That was, to date, the last we saw of The Inbetweeners, although its creators and cast have kept busy since. Morris, for instance, directed 2018โs underrated The Festival and this yearโs Netflix flick My Oxford Year. Beesley created and directed White Gold, meanwhile, before reteaming with Morris for The First Team. And then of The Inbetweeners cast, Simon Bird has directed the terrific drama Days Of The Bagnold Summer.
He and the rest of the lead cast โ James Buckley, Blake Harrison and Joe Thomas โ are set to be busy soon too, with the news that Iain Morris and Damon Beesley are bringing The Inbetweeners back. The plan looks to be to reunite the original characters, and take them on new adventures.
This follows murmurings of a third film, although itโs thus far unconfirmed what form the next generation of The Inbetweeners will look like. The deal thatโs been struck for their return โ between Banijay UK and Fudge Park Productions โ leaves the door open for everything from a new TV show to a stage play.
Further announcements are expected in due course. Itโs not even clear yet who will be backing the new project. The Inbetweeners was originally a Channel Four-backed production, and itโs pretty certain that Channel Four will be bidding again. This time though, donโt be surprised if a streaming service with much deeper pockets gets involved.
More, as always, as we hear it.x
