It’s out in the US, but Hasbro’s decision to offload Entertainment One might just have cost The Last Voyage Of The Demeter a UK cinema release.
It might not have set the box office alight over the weekend in the US, but at least American audiences have been able to see the latest Dracula-themed film on the big screen. The Last Voyage Of The Demeter has picked up fairly unenthusiastic reviews, and grossed just over $6m on its opening weekend. Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham and David Dastmalchian lead the movie.
However, whilst the film was planned for UK release this month as well, it very suddenly dropped off the schedule. The reason was nothing to do with the movie itself, rather business shenanigans.
The UK distribution of The Last Voyage Of The Demeter was being handled by Entertainment One, a company that had been bought up by Hasbro back in 2019. However, Hasbro had decided to pull back on EOne’s theatrical release arm, and just a few weeks ago came the confirmation of this news. That immediately took The Last Voyage Of The Demeter off the schedule.
Since then, Lionsgate has bought EOne, but that deal isn’t likely to have been in time for this particular movie. Universal has distributed it in America, but doesn’t have the rights in the UK. The suspicion is that by the time the theatrical rights over here are sorted, the film will probably skip the big screen altogether and just go straight to video on demand services. A pity if true, and we await confirmation of this. The bottom line is in the UK, the best way of watching The Last Voyage Of The Demeter on the big screen is to buy a plane ticket…
