Actor Giancarlo Esposito has revealed that Lucasfilm and Disney have plans to make The Mandalorian And Grogu the first in a trilogy (āor moreā) of movies.
A movie spin-off from hit Disney+ series The Mandalorian, The Mandalorian And Grogu is currently shooting somewhere in California. According to regular Mandalorian star Giancarlo Esposito, however, the movie wonāt be a one-off, but rather a trilogy ā or perhaps an even longer string of big-screen entertainments.
Esposito, who plays the villainous Moff Gideon in the Disney+ show, mentioned this during Dragon Con, a pop culture expo held in Atlanta Georgia in September (news of which comes to us via Culture Slate and Games Radar).
Amid a broader panel discussion about The Mandalorian and other Star Wars TV shows, Esposito said, āDave Filoni and Jon Favreau have a new vision, continuing on with a Mandalorian movie… My sense is that it’s all going to converge at one point or another and we’re going to have another set of… [a] trilogy, or more, of films.ā
Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau are the co-writers of that upcoming spin-off movie, which Favreau is also directing. Favreau is also the creator of the original Mandalorian series, which has been one of Lucasfilmās more successful attempts to mine the Star Wars universe on the large and small screen ā the studioās been on shakier territory with the likes of TVās The Acolyte (which was cancelled after one series) while its Rey movie is still stuck in some form of development hell.
If Espositoās sense is accurate, then it sounds as though Lucasfilm has given Filoni and Favreau the greenlight to expand its biggest Disney+ Star Wars success into a broader suite of movies. Pedro Pascal is set to reprise his role as the be-helmeted Din Djarin, Grogu has taken a huge salary increase to return as himself, while Sigourney Weaver is also set to star in a so-far unannounced part.
Elsewhere in the Star Wars pretend universe, Andor season two is due to stream in 2025, as is Ahsoka's second run. In movies, seemingly everyone in Hollywood is either working or has worked on something Star Wars-based; James Mangold, Taika Waititi, Shawn Levy, Rian Johnson and Patty Jenkins are just some of the people connected to various space fantasy projects. Clouded, those filmsā futures are.
The Mandalorian And Grogu is due in cinemas on the 22nd May 2026.
