The story of 1987’s Jaws: The Revenge is being explored in new documentary The Shark That Roared. Here’s the trailer and more info.

Pah. You can keep all your talk of Steven Spielberg’s classic original Jaws movie. You want the fun film stories? It’s worth heading to the sequels too, not least the uniformly lamented 1987 franchise-killer Jaws: The Revenge.

Directed by Joseph Sargent, the film landed a bit of a coup when it attracted Michael Caine to the cast. Caine, memorably, would say that he’d never seen the final feature, but he had seen the house that it paid for.

The film was universally panned when it was released, and its box office returns were below expectations. There were no subsequent plans for a Jaws 5.

So infamous a terrible movie is Jaws: The Revenge that to mark its 40th birthday next year, there’s a documentary feature film about it.

You may already know of this, but it’d completely failed to register on my, er, sonar before. The film had been brought to life in part by a successful Kickstarter campaign back in 2025, and a trailer for it appeared at the start of the year.

Kevin Smith has jumped aboard as executive producer, with the movie itself directed by Mike Gencarelli. He’s attracted by the looks of it people involved with the movie to have their say on it, and the production story behind it.

The logline for the moment is relatively straightforward – “A documentary on Jaws: The Revenge (1987) that celebrates the film’s 40th anniversary and its achieved fandom since its release.” – and the exploration into the film’s subsequent fandom should be interesting.
