Michael Smiley takes the lead role in the upcoming The Toll, and here’s the trailer for an incoming British film.

The brilliant Michael Smiley doesn’t get the number of lead roles he deserves, and it makes us particularly keen to see the incoming The Toll. This one’s billed as a dark comedy, in which he leads a cast that also includes Iwan Rheon, Annes Elwy, Julian Glover, Steve Oram and Paul Kaye.

Smiley plays a man working in the quietest toll booth in Wales, albeit one hiding from a criminal past. There’s also a female Elvis Presley impersonator thrown into the mix, as well as some unhappy sheep farmers. All in a film that’s directed by Ryan Andrew Hooper, his feature debut.

The film is getting a UK cinema and premium on demand release from August 27th, and we’ve got the official trailer and synopsis. Here then is a taste as to what’s in store…

The Toll is a hugely entertaining, irresistibly clever and darkly-comic crime caper, reminiscent of the Coen brothers’ finest work. The film stars Michael Smiley (Kill List, Luther), Annes Elwy (Little Women), Iwan Rheon (Game Of Thrones) and Paul Kaye (The Ghoul). On the Pembrokeshire border, a man (Michael Smiley: Kill List, Luther) working solo shifts in the quietest toll booth in Wales, hides from a criminal past where nobody would ever look. As his past actions catch up with him and his peace is shattered, he enlists the help of local ne’er-do-wells and oddballs (including a female Elvis impersonator, rampaging triplets and disgruntled sheep farmers) when village police officer Catrin(Annes Elwy: Little Women) grows increasingly suspicious…
