Work on a new take on The X-Files continues apace. Weeks after Daniel Deadwyler was hired for one of the leading roles, it’s been announced (via Deadline) that Himesh Patel (Yesterday, Tenet) is to join her as the series’ co-star.

While Jennifer Yale will serve as showrunner for the series, the pilot will be written and directed by Ryan Coogler. The rebooted sci-fi series will follow the same premise as the cult 90s original – a pair of FBI agents investigate paranormal phenomena, often connected to UFOs.

It’s said that Deadwyler and Patel will play entirely new characters, however, rather than new incarnations of Mulder and Scully.

It’s possible that Dana Scully herself, Gillian Anderson, may have some involvement in the new show, too: speaking to Entertainment Weekly earlier in March, the veteran X-Files star said that she’d “had a few conversations” with Ryan Coogler, and went on to talk enthusiastically about him and his pilot script.

“He’s such a cool guy, and so talented,” Anderson said. “And the pilot script is really good. I would say, have an open mind and give it a chance, because it’s gonna be f—ing cool. It really is.”

Coogler recently proved his horror credentials with last year’s Sinners, for which he won an Oscar, and he’s previously said his X-Files will be “really f—ing scary.”

“We’re gonna try to make something really great,” he added “and really be something for the real X-Files fans, and maybe find some new ones.”

It’s early days for the show yet, with Hulu only having given it the greenlight over the past few weeks. We’ll bring you more about an intriguing-sounding reboot as we get it, though. In the interim, why not have a read of our exploration of what Coogler might bring to the new X-Files?
