Tom Cruise is joined by two huge talents in World War II drama Broadsword, which will see him reunite with two Mission: Impossible alumni.

Tom Cruise’s slate for the next couple of years looks to have finally taken shape. The star’s post-Mission: Impossible career (although it’s always ahem, ‘possible’ that he’ll go back for more) has been in state of flux for months as projects have appeared and in one case, disappeared. However, the announcement of Broadsword – a film that will reunite him with regular Mission: Impossible director, Christopher McQuarrie – looks to have cleared things up.

Broadsword is a WWII-set film that, per World Of Reel, ‘will tell the story of an S.O.E. operation and a marine captain who crashes in France and becomes the sole survivor. Against all odds, he must complete his mission amidst the chaos of war.’

Cruise will be joined in the film by Henry Cavill (another Mission: Impossible collaborator) and Marion Cotillard.

That’s a pretty tidy headlining trio and we’re keen to see McQuarrie tackle a period war flick as a director. Perhaps he might veer away a little from the all-out action thrills of the Mission films? After all, McQuarrie wrote 2008’s Valkyrie, a WWII drama starring Cruise that’s a really great watch.

Since signing a deal with Warner Bros earlier this year, Cruise has committed to starring in the next film from The Revenant director, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. That one is set to shoot in the first half of 2025. The actor had also lined up a leading role opposite Scarlett Johansson in The Gauntlet, a remake of the Clint Eastwood drama that was due to be helmed by McQuarrie. Until last month, that one was set to happen until it suddenly disappeared, perhaps because the duo preferred this project?

Either way, after Broadsword, it looks like 2026 will see Top Gun 3 enter production. We know that one is happening because the film’s co-star, Glen Powell revealed on the HappySadConfused podcast that he’s been given a production date. Of course, these things can change but it looks like Cruise’s slate for the next couple of years is now pretty firmed up. We’ll let you know more as we hear it.
