Jerry Bruckheimer provides an update on Top Gun 3, revealing there’s a “wonderful story idea” for the sequel, but says Tom Cruise’s schedule means it’s all still up in the air.
As we’ve already seen this morning, producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s been doing the media rounds of late, dropping news nuggets like this one about the status of the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise.
He’s also talked a little bit about Top Gun 3 – something we mentioned in the story linked in that previous sentence, but thought was worth busting out for its own separate post.
It was announced earlier this year that Top Gun 3 is definitely happening, but there’s a slight problem: Tom Cruise is so perpetually busy that Bruckheimer isn’t entirely sure when the high-altitude sequel will start filming.
The good news, though, is that Joseph Kosinski, who directed the hit Top Gun: Maverick, has a “wonderful story idea” which Cruise is also happy with.
“It will be Tom Cruise [starring]” Bruckheimer told ScreenRant. “Tom is amazing. We spent time with him. We have a story. Joe Kosinski had a wonderful story idea for it, and [Tom] said, ‘I really like that,’ so we’re developing it. But you never know when it’s going to get made because Tom is so busy. He’s doing Mission: Impossible right now, he’s got a picture after it. Hopefully, we’ll get a screenplay that he loves, and we’ll be back in the air again.”

That Mission: Impossible film is the follow-up to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, which started filming this month somewhere in leafy Derbyshire. After that, though, Cruise is reportedly looking to pivot away from physical action roles and more towards dramatic stuff, with the actor linked to both Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Quentin Tarantino's next films.
Top Gun: Maverick made a barnstorming $1.5bn at the box office, though, so its producers will surely be doing all they can to coax Cruise back into the cockpit for a third time. Besides, sitting in a plane isn’t strictly speaking an action role – and what could be more dramatic than moving a joystick and shouting, “They’re right on my tail!”?
