Doctor Who Am I will explore Paul McGann’s brief onscreen stint as The Doctor in the 1996 TV Movie, and we now have a trailer and a UK release date.

It’s an exciting time to be a Doctor Who fan. The two 1960s Dalek movies are now available to own in deluxe Blu-ray formats with an astonishing array of extras. The BBC Centenary Special is incoming meanwhile, and will see current Doctor Jodie Whittaker and showrunner Chris Chibnall depart and welcome Ncuti Gatwa as the new Doctor and Russell T Davies, returning to showrunner duties after 12 years away.

Now, fans can also look forward to Doctor Who Am I, which will take a deep dive into the 1996 TV Movie. It introduced Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor and co- starred Daphne Ashbrook, Eric Roberts and Yee Jee Tso.

Matthew Jacobs, who wrote the script for the film, will assess its place in the context of the time, where there was no new Who on the horizon. The film brought hope to Whovians that there was a future for the series. It will also examine the writer as he dealt with a furious backlash from some sections of fandom, and the lasting effect this had on him.

McGann, Ashbrook and Roberts will all appear in the documentary alongside Jacobs.

The official logline describes Doctor Who Am I as “a funny and emotionally perilous documentary, packed full of Doctor Who whimsy and celebrating a passionate, united fanbase”.

Jacobs also co-directs the film alongside Vanessa Yuille, the latter making her directorial debut.

Doctor Who Am I will be released in select UK cinemas on the 13th October, before being released on digital platforms and DVD on the 7th November. You can pre-order the DVD here.
