The fourth instalment of the Riddick franchise is officially happening after a long wait, and here are the first details.

It’s been a long and winding road for Vin Diesel and writer/director David Twohy. The excellent Pitch Black, released in 2000, was a taut, tightly written sci-fi thriller that introduced dangerous convict Richard B. Riddick. Five years later, Twohy got a much bigger budget to make The Chronicles Of Riddick which, while not entirely successful, was full of interesting ideas (and if nothing else, gave us the glorious sight of Vin Diesel sharing the screen with Dame Judi Dench). In 2013, they took things back to basics with Riddick, a gritty survival thriller which saw the character fighting for his life after an assasination attempt while trying to reach his home planet of Furyia.

An animated short, Dark Fury, bridged the gap between the first two films, and three video games have expanded on the mythology of Riddick.

Now, we finally have confirmation that the fourth instalment is moving ahead.

Riddick: Furyia will see Riddick finally make it back home. He fears the worst, but this time is isn’t the Necromongers, but a far more vicious enemy. Riddick discovers that his fellow Furyians are more similar to him than he imagined, as he joins them in the fight.

Vin Diesel will of course return as the title character, as well as producing through his company One Race Films. No other casting has been announced.

David Twohy will once again write and direct.
