New anime release Weathering With You has proven to be a sizeable success at the UK box office.

The box office success story of the last weekend in the UK? That’d be Weathering With You, the new anime from Your Name director Makoto Shinkai.

Your Name – which is brilliant – was regarded as a hit when it played in UK cinemas, albeit contextually against what was expected for a subtitled animated film. In the case of Weathering With You, the movie grossed a staggering £221,320 over the weekend, around ten times the opening of Your Name.

As such, the decision has been made to expand the film to even more screens over the coming weekend. The movie was playing on just 40 screens over the past week, and from Friday January 30th, it’s expanding to 250. That’s a huge release for an anime title, and well deserved too. Lots of screenings are now up for prebooking on that date.

The movie is playing in both dubbed and subtitled versions, and you can find a screening near you via the film’s UK website, here:

Congratulations to all concerned.
