Sean Bean is to play the Sheriff Of Nottingham in a new Robin Hood TV series, with Jack Patten in the title role. More here.
A day after we get the news that Jodie Comer and Hugh Jackman are filming The Death Of Robin Hood in Belfast, news breaks of a second new project for the green-tighted one.
MGM is backing a new TV series of Robin Hood, and already cast in the leading role is Jack Patten. Now comes the news that serial dying on screen expert Sean Bean (pictured, in Age Of Heroes) is to take on the role of the Weetabix-munching Sheriff of Nottingham in the new adaptation.
John Glenn (no, not the astronaut) is overseeing the show, described almost inevitably as a ‘modern take’ on the story. There’s no casting yet for Maid Marian, though weāre told the relationship between her and Robin is set to be beefed up for the new show. As much a partner in crime as anything.
And then there’s Sean Bean’s Sheriff. This time, he’s envisaged more as a statesman, someone who oversees Nottingham more out of a sense of duty than cruelty.
A pilot episode is being shot, and Jonathan English (Ironclad) is the person behind the camera for it. Inevitably, should that work out, then a full series is planned thereafter.
Clearly there are more parts of the casting jigsaw to be sorted out here, and human spoiler Sean Bean adds one major piece.
I’d call it a resurgence of interest in Robin Hood that this series is part of, but in truth, when the story is high profile and copyright-free, it’s perhaps unsurprising that Hollywood is keen to cash in. More news on this latest iteration of Robin Hood as we hear it, and the earliest I’d imagine we’ll see it on screen is the end of this year, more likely the start of next.
We’ll leave you with Robin Hood’s finest screen outing…
