Two teasers have been released for the new Asterix film, Asterix And Obelix: The Middle Kingdom – directed by Guillaume Canet.

In the next year or so we’re going to be treated to new incarnations of Asterix in both live action and animation. The animated show will be Asterix And The Big Fight, a CG animation made for Netflix by director Alain Chabat. So far we have no idea what that’s going to look like.

The live action version, meanwhile, will be Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom, not only directed by Guillaume Canet but also starring him as Asterix. Canet previously made Tell No One and Little White Lies, both of which were pretty darn good and very un-Asterix like. Is he a good match for the indomitable gauls?

Judge for yourself. Here are two teasers – one from a few weeks ago, and a slightly more elaborate one from this week.

That’s a remarkably stuffed cast, topped off with Vincent Cassel as Caesar, Gilles Lelouche as Obelix, and Marion Cotillard, Canet’s partner, as Cleopatra.

As well as Julie Chen as Princess Fu Yi, the character who kickstarts the plot by seeking help from Asterix and Obelix, the supporting cast also features a number of well-known cameos including the Belgian pop star Angèle and hip hop duo Bigflo and Oli.

In short, this could well be a HUGE hit in its native France when it rolls out on 1 February 2023. Hopefully that sort of kinetic energy will translate into a proper cinema release here in the UK too.
