The cast is coming together for Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later, with Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes and Aaron Taylor-Johnson among its ensemble.

28 Years Later is an apt title for a film that has been teased for decades. Information about 28 Years Later has been drip fed over the last few months, though, and now we finally have some concrete details.

Firstly, Boyle is back in the director’s chair, with Garland writing the script. Original producer Andrew Macdonald is back, and Cillian Murphy, who starred in 28 Days Later, is also on board as an executive producer.

According to Deadline, Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes will lead the cast.

Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland brought the zombie movie into the 21st century with 2002’s 28 Days Later. 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later, which was directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo from a script he co-wrote with Rowan Joffe, was not as well received (although still very worth seeking out), and for many years it looked like that would be it.

Boyle and Garland frequently expressed a desire to return to that world, and it seems as though the long delay was simply a matter of getting their schedules to align. In recent years Boyle made T2: Trainspotting and Yesterday, while Garland wrote and directed a string of impressive sci-fi and horror films, including Ex-Machina, Men and the terrific Civil War, which is in cinemas now. Sadly, one film he hasn’t made yet is a sequel to Dredd, but action cinema fans the world over are still campaigning.

If you fancy seeing the original film on the big screen, Cineworld is showing a selection of Danny Boyle’s work over the next few weeks, from his brilliant directorial debut Shallow Grave to Trainspotting and even the underrated Sunshine. Tickets cost £5, you can find details here.

28 Years Later will be the first film of a trilogy, it was reported last week that Candyman director Nia DaCosta will helm the second film. The plan is to shoot both films back to back.

It sounds as though production will begin imminently, so we’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
