“Ever since I was a child, people said my family was cursed,” Zac Efron says at the beginning of The Iron Claw trailer.
The film, from prolific studio a24, will chart the rise and tragic fall of the Von Erich brothers and their wrestling dynasty. The family curse Efron’s Kevin Von Erich is talking about in the trailer? We won’t spoil anything here, but the Von Erichs went from tragedy to tragedy, as hinted in the trailer.

The film has a very handsome cast. Efron’s Kevin is our eyes into the story, but he is supported by The Bear -star Jeremy Allen White as Kerry, Harris Dickinson as David and Stanley Simons as Mike. Holt McCallany will portray the brothers’ tough father Fritz while Maura Tierney appears as their mother. Lily James plays Kevin’s love interest, Pam.
Durkin’s film looks like it’s going to be part sports movie, part biopic as it charts the tragic end of the Von Erich wrestling empire.
Here’s the official synopsis: “The true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, who made history in the intensely competitive world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s. Through tragedy and triumph, under the shadow of their domineering father and coach, the brothers seek larger-than-life immortality on the biggest stage in sports.”
Set in the 80s and early 90s, we can expect a lot of very manly things, great costume design and a lot of tunes, but also a focus on male mental health and the pressure the Von Erich brothers faced, both inside and outside the ring.
The film is set for a December release in the US. There’s no word on when The Iron Claw might be released in the UK and whether it will be distributed by a24 themselves or by another company. With such a stacked cast, there is a lot of buzz around the film, so we should have an update on the release date soon enough. That being said, Bottoms only confirmed a UK release date earlier this week despite having been released in the US weeks ago, but we like to keep a positive mindset.
