Get your Poké Balls ready: Aardman Animation and Pokémon are plotting a mystery project. More on the news below.
We’re a week away from the cinema release of Aardman’s new Wallace & Gromit film, but it seems there’s more claymation still to come.
Variety reports that Aardman Animation and Pokémon are collaborating on a new mystery project. It could be a feature film or perhaps a TV show or something else entirely, but whatever it turns out to be is set to be released in 2027.
“This is a dream partnership for Pokémon,” said Taito Okiura, VP of marketing and media at The Pokémon Company International. Aardman are masters of their craft, and we have been blown away by their talent and creativity. What we have been working on together ensures our global Pokémon fans are in for a treat!”
“It’s a huge honour to be working with The Pokémon Company International,” Sean Clarke, managing director of Aardman, added. “We feel sincerely privileged to be trusted with bringing their characters and world to life in a brand-new way. Bringing together Pokémon, the world’s biggest entertainment brand, together with our love of craft, character and comedic storytelling feels incredibly exciting. Aardman and TPCi share an emphasis on heritage and attention to detail as well as putting our fans and audiences at the heart of what we do, which we know will steer us right as we together create charming, original and new stories for audiences around the world.”
Both Pokémon and Aardman have deals with Netflix, so it would make sense for the project to hit the small screens exclusively on the streamer at some point. Netflix released a stop-motion animated TV show, Pokémon Concierge, in 2023 to positive reviews and more episodes are on the way, it could be that Aardman is working on something along similar lines.
If you’re after more Aardman, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl is in cinemas on 18th December before airing on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Christmas Day.
