Saoirse Ronan and LaKeith Stanfield are to headline Foe, an ambitious sci-fi film that’s just been added to Amazon’s roster.
Foe, a hot property at the Cannes Film Festival market, has reportedly been snapped up for distribution by Amazon. The film promises to be a weird, sci-fi drama featuring the very talented Saoirse Ronan and the equally talented LaKeith Stanfield, alongside newcomer Paul Mescal. It is unclear as yet if the streaming platform has secured worldwide rights or just for the US.
The film’s plot focuses on ‘the near future where corporate power and environmental decay are ravaging the planet’.
The description adds that ‘Junior (Mescal) and Hen (Ronan) are a young couple married seven years and living a solitary life on their isolated farm. One night, a stranger named Terrance (Stanfield) knocks on their door, bringing news that throws their lives into turmoil: Junior has been randomly selected to travel to a large, experimental space station orbiting Earth. The most unusual part? Arrangements have already been made so that when he leaves’, an artificial copy of him will be left behind to take his place’.
As if the talent in front of the camera, plus that interesting conceit weren’t enough, Lion director Gareth Davis will be helming the film from a script he co-wrote with Ian Reid, the author of the original novel. Reid also penned I’m Thinking Of Ending Things, the film version of which was adapted by Charlie Kaufman for Netflix.
Davis spoke about the film, discussing in particular the way he intends to tackle sci-fi as a genre:.“I’ve been on the hunt to do something in sci-fi, it was always on my bucket list, and also to find material I could make an actor’s piece with a Cassavetian level of performance, I read Foe and could not put it down. It’s incredibly suspenseful, very moving and dealt with sci-fi in a most grounded way that spoke to where we are heading as a society, with a lot of the questions we all have, explored in a profound way. And the love story just broke my heart, this story of self-determination, fighting for the things that are most precious in our lives, and reminding audiences that this time we have here is precious and the way we treat each other is the way we need to be treating the planet. Foe was just a bull’s-eye, for me”.
There’s a lot of potential here, should cast, creators and source material coalesce nicely. We’ll keep you informed as we hear more. Filming is set to begin in January in Australia.
