The rumours have proved to be true and Loki scribe Michael Waldron has been named as the new writer on the next Avengers movie.

A couple of weeks ago we covered a story that reported that Destin Daniel Cretton had exited the director’s chair of Marvel Studio’s upcoming Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

Following the film being pushed back by a year into 2026, the Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings director left the role, probably because he has other Marvel commitments including a Shang-Chi sequel and directing and executive producing duties on the Wonder Man TV show.

When that story was circulating, The Ringer's Joanna Robinson, author of the recently-released book MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, (well worth a read by the way) offered an additional take: the film’s writer, Jeff Loveness, wouldn’t be staying on the project either given that it was looking increasingly likely that Marvel would be moving away from the Kang character because of Jonathan Majors’ ongoing (and very public) legal troubles.

As Robinson put it, “[Loveness] was all wrapped up in this Kang storyline and they [Marvel] are likely going to be moving away from that.”

Well, half of Robinson’s prediction has come to pass with the news that Loveness has indeed been replaced on the next Avengers film, with Loki and Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness writer Michael Waldron coming on board instead.

Waldron was already confirmed around a year ago as the writer of the following Avengers film, that being Secret Wars. It now looks like he’ll be tackling both of them.

The key question that remains then, is where does this leave the Kang storyline?

If the other half of Robinson’s prediction is true, then could Avengers: The Kang Dynasty make way for a different Avengers project? The piece over at Deadline where this news emerged makes no such prediction, but it makes for an intriguing possibility as Marvel Studios looks to course correct following a pretty choppy year. We’ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
